pThough we think because it is 2011 that slavery is a thing of the past we are very wrong. Sadly, human trafficking and slavery is very much an everyday problem. /p pThe even sadder part is so many times it is not the invisible enemy or a stranger that pass our children off to this very real danger. With the growing rate of drug addiction; addicted parents are trading off their children for drugs. /p pWhen these children strike back against their assailant to stop the pain and humiliation they are incarcerated simply for protecting themselves where society failed to. /p pHere are some sad facts provided but GEMS Council: /p pbFacts about CSEC amp; Domestic Trafficking:/b /p ul liCSEC is sexual activity involving a child in exchange for something of value, or promise thereof, to the child or another person or persons.nbsp; The child is treated as a commercial and sexual object.nbsp; CSEC is a form of violence against children. /li/ul ul liIn New York City alone there are an estimated 2,200 children victimized by commercial sexual exploitation annually (OCFS 2007 Prevalence Study). /li/ul ul liThe Department of Justice estimates the most frequent age of entry into the commercial sex industry in the United States is 12-14 years old (a href="http://www.usdoj.gov"www.usdoj.gov/a). /li/ul ul li100,000 ? 300,000 children are at risk for commercial sexual exploitation each year in the United States (Estes amp; Weiner, 2001). /li/ul ul liAn estimated 1.6 million children run away from home each year in the US.nbsp; The average time it takes before a runaway is approached by a trafficker or solicitor is 48 hours (National Runaway Switchboard). li70-90% of commercially sexually exploited children have a history of child sexual abuse (Murphy, 1993). /li/ul pLast updated by a href="http://councilofdaughters.ning.com/profile/gems"GEMS/a Oct. 15, 2010. /p pAs a mother of four daughters and just being a female I feel very strongly about this matter.
