1. As an artist, what is the hardest part of what you do?
See what I create as meaningful to others.
2. Who or what was your influence on music?
Like an endlessly shifting kaleidoscope I've never been able to land
on one thing. Music itself fascinates me. I listened to whatever was
on growing up, like everyone, and I had 2 completely opposite tastes
to take from, without one intruding on the other. I would listen to
Pantera, Metallica, Tool, stuff like that at my mother's. And at my
dad's, he always had on Ice Cube, NWA, Nas, Eminem, Snoop, still loves
that emergent era of hip-hop with an iron will. I had a weird phase
where I only listened to post-rock like Mogwai, God is An Astronaut,
Godspeed You Black Emperor. But I always loved rap. I never wanted to
do it till i was 15-16. I wanted to be in a metal band since the moment
I could hold an image in my minds eye. But rap eventually enthralled me
completely as an artform. It is the perfect fusion of style and substance
that seems almost paradoxical. It can create and destroy people if they let it.
We as human beings have so much power to influence one another, so rap to me is
more than music. Its prophecy, speaking to create. For better or worse.
3. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
My music sounds nothing like his, but Mick Jenkins.
4. If you could open a show for any artist who would it be?
Denzel Curry so I could get shown up but still be able
to go absolutely nuts as an opener.
5. What is your creative process like?
Sit down, light up, start writing.
6. What are you working on right now?
A mixtape showcasing a variety of different styles.
7. Favorite place to eat?
A local sushi place (sorry JID) called Zenbu.
Excellent, exquisite, all my girlfriends I take there
end up leaving me. So they work like a filter and keep
me on my Square as well. Jokes, just a sucker for great
sushi. Especially fruity sushi.
8. Do you plan on staying where you live or are you going to move?
Somewhere with baroque statues I can stare at pretentiously.
9. How many people are on your team?
Anyone who's with it.
My group IXXI is Chayce,
Taiku and Myself. So, Thrice Great.
10. What advice would you tell yourself 5 years ago?
Stop jerking off.
