The city of Detroit in recent years has seen the lowest of lows economically and to the north rests
an untapped hip hop market in Canada. Firmly rooted in Detroit, DJ Needle has dug deep within himself to
will his way towards success. His childhood friends got him intrigued by music and he began spinning
records at the age of 14. Traveling across the U.S. border into Windsor, Ontario Canada and ot
her
provinces, has opened Needle’s eyes to a broader scope of the industry. Unbeknownst to yours truly,
Needle told me, “Hip hop is very popular in Canada.” DJ Needle’s primary focus is to get unheard, hungry
artists into the spotlight so they can prosper amongst the music industry’s elite.
Every deejay has their first piece of vinyl. For Needle, “Roxanne, Roxanne” off the 1985, UTFO
album was his first record. Since then, other deejays like Jazzy Jeff and Detroit’s own The Wizard aka Jeff
Millz helped Needle create his own unique style. According to Needle, originality and uniqueness seem to
be lacking in today’s hip hop scene. As he put it, “the radio stations are playing music released by the
labels, but the music in the rotation lacks substance.” Needle would like to generate a bigger buzz by
recording with artists like Eminem, Kanye West, Diamond (of Crime Mob) and even Prince. Ambition and
patience are the keys. Every success story begins with a vision and Needle has a vision that’s clean cut.

Critics of hip hop can stand back and assume the music as a whole possesses no redeeming value
if garbage is all that’s presented to the public. It takes an inquisitive person to find out for themselves, the
integrity of a genre DJ Needle has grown to fully appreciate. Needle has honed his business skills while
becoming the owner of 914 Ent, also a major partner in I-Party Nation Ent. IMG-Gulf Coast/Universal
assigned him as an A&R contact for the Midwest and Canadian regions. While concentrating on radio
promotions and the U.S./Canadian deejay circuit, Needle has played hip hop, rhythm & blues, Latin, techno
and house music dependent on the venue. Clubs, raves, house parties, high school parties, the mix tape
scene, college campuses and live hip hop shows are all on Needle’s resume. He’s currently arranging a hot
mix tape hosted by Kardinal Offishal to be released this summer; another notable project for hip hop heads
to stay tuned in on.
DJ Needle states, “It’s real difficult for deejays to find jobs, but it’s still up to us to plug real hip
hop”. This loyalty to the music stems from his earlier days as a deejay for the group formerly known as the
D.C.G.’s (Detroit City Gangsters). Needle played the role of the late, great Jam Master Jay. Jay inspired
many deejays to improve their craft and yes, every deejay/operator has their ideal machinery. Tech1200,
Serato, Rane, along with Pioneer are the equipment brands Needle utilizes. As Needle’s evolution
progressed, he’s networked with labels for songs and presently subscribes to the music update service,
Franchise Record Pool. Future Star DJs, as a professional deejay association, has Needle on their list of
highly reputable entertainers.
Entertain should be Needle’s middle name, when presently our turbulent, global atmosphere has
the world on pins and needles. Quality music and entertainment has become a social necessity. DJ Needle
has us on the edge of our seats trying to tune out the revolution and delve into his hypnotic, spectacular
