There are different kinds of DJ's these days. I have to give respect to all forms. THere are mixtape DJ's that find new music and they get props for that. Then there are dj's that blend music for cd's. Some DJ's rock parties, then there are mixshow dj's that hit you off and they break music too. Me personally I like different DJ's for different reasons. You just have to know what you are getting from each type of dj. Now I will say I enjoy music and have been known to make a hot playlist on an ipod and let it play at a club when there is no DJ (there are some licenses clubs have to have to have DJ playing that some owners don't want to pay for here in Chicago) and people have asked who is the DJ. In that sense, I could be considered a DJ, but I know better. To me, that is more comparable to a program director or music director. Different DJ's get respect for different reasons, but if you keep my my attention, I will give you props.
I think the DJ must have at least one the following qualities:

-the innate abiity to play the right song at the right time

-the ability to mix songs in a way that is crowd pleasing

-vinyl control

These days everyone claims to be a dj once they buy that "dj in a box" stuff.

Check this analogy...Too many djs have tried to go "straight the pros without even playing in HIGH SCHOOL". The touch and feel of vinyl is essential to the dj and many djs today don't have the skill of vinyl control. They can probably still turn it out but real djs know the deal when it comes to the science of rocking a crowd on wax.
I can speak from my views as not a DJ but someone who's clients do depend on the DJ. It has seem to me that in the past few DJ's are just DJ'ing because they can not for the passion of DJ'ing. No longer are club DJ's (in the areas I have been in recently) the RECORDING BREAKING DJ's of the past, they are everything from pay to play DJ's (which isnt always a bad thing) and are just again there because they can DJ not because they LOVE DJ'ing. I remember when the DJ was the one who could make or break your record, when you didnt need an extra host, the DJ was the one who took the party to another level. That is rare now and days at least in most markets I have seen. There are those out there that still do this because they love it, because they know that they have the power to make someones career, to help someone, to let people hear great music, to make someones night.
I miss the old DJ when I walked into a party, and they commanded that stage, they commanded that respect and that not everyone was a DJ, it took talent, skill, homework on the hottest records out around the world, to feel the vibe of the crowd and actually keep the vibe moving, not just play a record because they felt like it.
To me, the DJ still is the top of the hip hop food chain, and My respect for the DJ is something that no one can tarnish, because there are those out there that still love what they do, and do what they do because they want to.
The DJ is really the heart of hip hop, People tend to forget that now and days.
why is johnny o always talking about me ???? lol
